Only the day before, I’d been congratulating myself — like the self-development guru who proclaims ‘my self-worth is not defined by my bank account, I choose happiness!’ So how could it be that twelve hours later, the numbers looked so different? And why is it easier to be ‘happy no matter what your bank balance is’ when your bank balance is high?

As I walk toward the centre of town, the vibe changes. The noise grows. These clever Albanians are making the most of the COVID-induced lull in tourism to re-construct the entire city centre. It’s loud, inconvenient, and ugly. The construction stretches on and on; it takes half an hour just to cross. The whole heart of the town is affected.
